Claude says I hit my usage limit. What uses it up, and what can I change?

What I'm trying to do

I was in the middle of something and Claude told me I'd hit my usage limit. I don't feel like I used it that much.

What actually uses it up faster: long chats, the model I pick, or the features I turn on? And is there anything I can change so it lasts longer?

What Claude's help center says, checked on 2026-10-04:

• Usage limits are a budget for a period of time. Once you hit one, you wait for it to reset.

• What uses it: the length and complexity of your conversations, the features you use, the model you chat with, and the effort level you select.

• One limit for everything: claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop all count toward the same usage limit.

• Long chats: with code execution enabled, Claude summarizes long conversations automatically, and those chats use more of your limit. The help center suggests starting a new conversation when you're close to the limit in a long chat.

• Making it last: batch similar requests into one message, be specific and concise, and review your prompt before you send it. Usage settings show how much you've used.
