Can I use ChatGPT-made images in my ebook or ads? Who owns them?

What I'm trying to do

I made some images with ChatGPT and I'd like to use them on my ebook cover and in a few ads. Am I allowed to do that? Do I own them, or does OpenAI?

And could I get in trouble later, for example if an image looks too much like someone else's work?

Not legal advice. For anything big, ask a lawyer where you live.

• Ownership: OpenAI's Terms of Use say that, as between you and OpenAI and to the extent applicable law allows, you retain your rights in your input and own the output.

• Ownership isn't clearance. Before you publish, check for logos or trademarks you don't own, real people's faces without their permission, and anything that copies a living artist's recognizable style or a known character.
